Equality Index

Mar. 24, 2026 disponible en français

– Dad, I aced the mock DNB1 exam in EMC2!
– What was it about?
– We had to write a speech of more than 10 lines on gender equality. I wrote over 30! I included everything: equal pay, the ability to become a boss, the right to live free from sexism, even removing gender agreements in French that always prioritize men… It was awesome! It was just like when you talk about your coworkers in meetings where you stand up for employees3!

Last week, we discussed the Professional Equality Index4 when my company’s results were published. Of course, that helped!

  1. The DNB, for “Diplôme National du Brevet”, is a national exam in France taken at the end of collège (middle school, typically at age 14–15). It includes both written tests and continuous assessment throughout the year. Mock exams are often held to prepare students for the real test. ↩

  2. EMC, for “Enseignement Moral et Civique”, is a mandatory subject in French schools (similar to Civics or Social Studies in the US) that covers topics like citizenship, ethics, human rights, and societal values. ↩

  3. CSE, for “Comité Social et Économique”, is a mandatory employee representative body in French companies with 11 or more employees. It serves as a platform for dialogue between employers and employees on various issues, including gender equality. ↩

  4. The Professional Equality Index is a French government-mandated metric that evaluates companies on gender equality in the workplace. It considers factors such as pay gaps, promotion rates, and representation of women in leadership positions. ↩
